The Viola N. Thompson Scholarship fund has provided financial assistance for more than 20 years to individuals choosing a career in healthcare. Any person who is accepted into or enrolled in a degreed or certificate and professional health care curriculum is eligible to apply for a scholarship. Scholarships are awarded based on student scholastic achievement, financial needs and available funds. Scholarship recipients are required to work in a regular staff position at Greenville Regional Hospital or Fair Oaks Nursing Home after they complete their training or education. A scholarship committee of the Auxiliary and staff members selects the recipients from applications.
The Viola Thompson Scholarship Committee awards several scholarships to Greenville Regional Hospital staff members and others who are pursuing professional health care careers.
Recent scholarship recipients include two pharmacy students, four individuals studying to become registered nurses, one licensed practical nursing student and two people who are studying to become respiratory therapists.
Viola Thompson established her scholarship fund with the Utlaut Memorial Foundation more than 20 years ago with an endowment of $365,000. She stipulated that only the interest of this fund can be used for scholarships. Mrs. Thompson taught in rural Bond County for 27 years. She and her husband, Harold, had a love for their farm and the simple things in life. Mrs. Thompson often expressed concern about the affordability of education for those training to be healthcare professionals. |
